The owner Leigh Bradley and his son Luke had both suffered very badly from skin reactions brought on in no small part by the various chemicals that had been in common use back then (and still are by most cleaners) Many of these agents (it is true to say) are better suited to oven cleaning (they are so caustic) and many cleaning companies are still using these nasty chemical agents because they are cheap and like oven cleaner they actually do clean! Unfortunately the effect does not last it’s partly an illusion brought about by optical brighteners and worse still the alkalinity of the chemical is so high it leaves a residue in the carpets and upholstery that will rapidly attract soilage back.

What was really shocking were the effects some of these cleaning chemicals were having on pets! In the course of their work they came across several clients whose pet dogs were having terrible problems with allergies particularly skin ailments, they were subsequently able to prove the conditions were exacerbated by the chemicals used in the cleaning of  the carpets  by the previous cleaner. They were able to establish this because they used a natural vegetable based cleaning agent to clean the affected carpets with then rinsed them through with pure water, this in each case led significantly to a resolving of the animal's plight.

It did not take a great leap of imagination to acknowledge the fact that many clients and their families were being affected as well by these harsh cleaning agents. In fact, the number of children who are nowadays suffering from atopic eczema is truly shocking and there is no doubt in my mind that the chemicals that are being used by many cleaners are sadly contributing to these problems.

 

Dangers associated with solvent cleaning.

 

There is an even more frightening side to this story! due to a misperception that has formed with regards to the different methods of cleaning deployed by cleaning companies, some people are under the illusion that dry cleaning literally means what it says! unfortunately dry cleaning utilises solvents and these are liquids (supplied by the petrol/chemical industry) have to evaporate in to the air that you are breathing in your home or place of work.This air is toxic and to someone with respiratory issues, especially an individual with asthma, the solvent fumes could be lethal. That’s why the cleaner if he has read the COSHH sheets (Control Of Substances Hazardous to Health) supplied with the products, should be wearing a carbon filter mask. It can actually take longer for these solvents to dry and evaporate after upholstery cleaning than it does for the same item to dry having been cleaned with the truck mount approach that we now use.

 

As a policy we feel that solvent cleaning is toxic, not just to you the client, also to your children and pets, but it is also damaging to our health even while wearing a mask our skin will still breathe and therefore still absorbs the solvent, so we have chosen not to continue with this environmentally unsafe and toxic method! What's more, it does not even clean effectively, this is often very noticable after having undertaken the dry cleaning of rugs especially the oriental silks.

As a footnote I personally know of several cleaners who have suffered bouts of cancer and the question must be raised how much have the solvents they used had to do with their illness?

So do not choose unhealthy approaches when having your carpets and upholstery cleaned. choose a truck mount system that cleans using Eco friendly methods.
